What
is a title tag?
The
title tag has been - and probably always will be - one of the most
important factors to achieve high rankings in search engines.
In
fact, fixing just the title tags of your pages can often generate
quick and appreciable differences to your rankings. And as the words
in the title tag are what appear in the clickable link on the page of
search engine results (SERP), changing them may result in more
clicks.
Search
Engines and Title Tags
Title
tags are definitely one of the "big three" as far as the
algorithmic weight given to them by the search engines, which are as
important as your visible text copy and the links pointing to your
pages - maybe even more. However, even though this has been common
knowledge among SEO professionals at least 10 years, it is often
overlooked by webmasters and others trying to optimize their websites
for search engine traffic specific .
Make
company names belong in the title tag?
The
answer is a resounding YES! I've realized that it's okay to put your
company name in the title, and (gasp!) to place at the beginning of
the label! In fact, if your company is already a known brand, I would
say it is essential. Even if you're not yet known brand, chances are
you'd like to be, right? The title tag gives you a great opportunity
to advance this cause.
This
does not mean that you should put * just * your company name in the
title tag. Even the best known brands will benefit from some good
descriptive phrases added, because it will improve their brand, as
well as traffic to your search engine. People who already know your
company and look for his name can be found in the engines, and so
those who have never heard of you, but look for the products or
services you sell.
Tags
title should contain keyword phrases
For
example, if your company is "Johnson and Smith Inc." a tax
accounting firm in Texas, you want your company's site appears in the
search results for searches on phrases like "Texas tax
accountants" and "Accounting in Texas". (Be sure to do
your keyword research to find the best quotes!) If you prefer to work
with people just in the Dallas area, you'd need to be even more
specific by adding geographical modifiers to your title tags, as
"Dallas tax accountants".
Dallas
counter Using our example, you can create a title tag like this:
Johnson
and Smith in Dallas Tax Accountants
or
you can try:
Johnson
and Smith - Dallas CPAs
However,
there is more than enough room in the title tag to include these two
important keyword phrases. I think the use of 10-12 words in my title
tags works great.
One
way to include two key phrases would be:
Johnson
and Smith - Dallas Tax Accountants - Accounting in Dallas, TX
I've
always liked the method of separating phrases with a hyphen, but in
today's competitive market, how your ad appears on the SERPs is a
crucial aspect of your SEO campaign. After all, if you have high
search engine rankings, but buyers are not aimed accessed, it will
not do much good.
The
idea is to write compelling titles in the scene, just when you can.
But it also depends on the page, the type of business, the targeted
keyword phrases, and many other factors. There is nothing wrong in
the title tag in the above example. If you're looking for a tax
accountant in Dallas and saw the list in Google, which probably click
it. (Note:. Do not worry if some of your data visible title tag is
cut when the search engines display the information on your page,
they are still indexing all component words)
Still,
you can make a judgment can be read as follows:
Johnson
and Smith are Tax Accounting and Bookkeeping in Dallas, TX
I'm
so excited about that. I had to remove the exact phrase "Tax
Accounting Dallas" because it would read if it said:
Johnson
and Smith are Dallas Tax Accountants and Accounting in Dallas, TX
It
sounds redundant that way, as if written only for the search engines.
In
the end, it's really a personal preference.
Do
not get crazy trying to create the perfect title tag, because there
is simply no such thing. Most likely, one of my examples that work
well. The best thing to do is try different and see what bring more
traffic to your website. You may very well find that the second
version does not rank well, but is clicked on, actually making a
difference.
Use
your text as a guide Visible Copy
I
prefer to create my title tags * after * the copy of the page has
been written and optimized. I have to see how the copywriter
integrated the keyword phrases in content to know where to start. If
you have done a good job with his writing (or better yet, hire a
professional SEO copywriter), you should find all the information you
need right in your page. Just choose the keyword phrases most
relevant to the copy is based on, and write a compelling title tag
accordingly. If you can not seem to get an idea of the most important
phrases for a page, you probably need to re-write the content of the
page.
I
recommend you * not used * an exact expression taken from the copy as
your title tag. And do not use the exact text that is in the top
title. It is much better to have a single sentence or a string of
words in appealing your title tag.
You
want to be careful with certain systems web content management (CMS)
and blog software that automatically generates the title tag of the
information you provided elsewhere. Some, in fact, the failure of the
exact same title tag on every page, it's the best way to kill your
potential customers search engine! The good news is that most of
today's software CMS and blog have solutions for you to customize
your title tags fairly easily. If yours does not, or the developer
says he can not do this, then you'll want to find a new developer or
CMS as soon as possible!
